Major Conferences and Symposia Organized (1990-present)

24-27 september 1991: Fourth International Conference of the Spanish Society for Medieval English Language and Literature (SELIM). Position: Chair.

7-11 September 2000: Eleventh International Conference on English Historical Linguistics (11 ICEHL). Position: Chair. This conference series is the major forum for debate in the field of English historical linguistics; the latest editions were hosted by the Universities of Zurich (August 2012), Leuven (July 2014), Duisburg-Essen (August 2016), Edinburgh (August 2018) and Leiden (June 2021).

12-14 December 2002: 26th International Conference of the Spanish Association for English and American Studies (AEDEAN). Position: member of the Organising Committee.

17-20 July 2005: Third International Conference New Reflections on Grammaticalization (NRG3). Position: member of the Organising Committee. Other editions of NRG were held in Potsdam (1999), Amsterdam (2002), Leuven (2008) and Edinburgh (2012).

10-11 May 2008: First International Postgraduate Conference on English Linguistics (ELC1). This was a meeting for PhD students organised by my students Carlos Prado-Alonso, Iria Pastor-Gómez and other postgrads, and supported by our research group and the ELC network. The plenary speakers were Ingo Plag (University of Siegen), Geoffrey K. Pullum (University of Edinburgh) and Antonella Sorace (University of Edinburgh).

21-22 September 2012: Third International Postgraduate Conference on Language and Cognition (ELC3). This was a new meeting in the series of postgraduate conferences organized by our PhD students. The following speakers gave plenary presentations: José Manuel Igoa (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid), Pilar García-Mayo (University of the Basque Country), Graeme Trousdale (University of Edinburgh).

22-26 May 2013: 34th Conference of the International Computer Archive for Modern and Medieval English (ICAME34). Position: member of the Organising Committee.

31 July 2015: The Diachrony of Valence: Changes in argument structure. One-day workshop organised in the context of the 22nd International Conference on Historical Linguistics, University of Naples. Workshop organisers: Werner Abraham (Univ. of Vienna), Matthias Eitelmann (Univ. of Mainz), Teresa Fanego, Elly van Gelderen (Arizona State University) and Dagmar Haumann (Univ. of Bergen).

4-5 April 2017: Santiago-Leuven-Edinburgh seminar on Grammatical Variation and Change in English, KU Leuven. This two-day seminar was organised as part of a research project on gradience, constructionalization and linguistic variation involving the universities of Santiago de Compostela, Edinburgh and Leuven. The project was funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (PI: Teresa Fanego, grant no. FFI2014-52188-P).

24 May 2017: Advances in corpora of legal English: Investigating variation in legal discourse. One-day workshop organised  in the context of ICAME38 (Annual Conference of the International Computer Archive of Modern and Medieval English), Charles University in Prague. Workshop convenors: Teresa Fanego and Paula Rodríguez-Puente.

17-19 November 2017: International workshop on Gradience and Constructional Change, held at the University of Edinburgh. It was organised in cooperation with the Universities of Edinburgh and KU Leuven, as one of the activities of our research project (now concluded) on gradience, constructionalization and linguistic variation (Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, grant no. FFI2014-52188-P; PI: Teresa Fanego).

26 August-1 September 2020: 53rd Annual Meeting of the Societas Linguistica Europaea: SLE 2020 Platform. Organisers: Executive Committee of SLE.
